Understanding Casing Burst & Collapse

Casing design ensures the wellbore maintains structural integrity throughout the life of a well. The three primary failure modes are burst (internal pressure exceeding strength), collapse (external pressure exceeding resistance), and tension (axial load exceeding body yield). Each has a design factor (safety factor) that accounts for uncertainties in loading and material properties.

Burst pressure is calculated using Barlow's equation with a 0.875 wall thickness factor per API 5C3 to account for manufacturing tolerances. Collapse resistance depends on the D/t ratio and transitions between yield, plastic, transition, and elastic collapse regimes. Built by Groundwork Analytics.
