Concentration Units in Petroleum Engineering

Concentration conversions are essential in produced water analysis, chemical injection design, corrosion monitoring, and environmental compliance. In dilute aqueous solutions, ppm is approximately equal to mg/L and ppb is approximately equal to ug/L, but this equivalence breaks down for brines and heavy solutions where density differs significantly from 1 g/mL.

Molarity (mol/L) and normality (equivalents/L) are used in titration and chemical dosing calculations. Normality = Molarity x Valence, where valence depends on the reaction type (acid/base, redox, precipitation).
