Fracture Width Calculator

Calculate average propped fracture width from proppant volume or mass, fracture geometry, and proppant pack properties.

Inputs

Sand ≈ 165, Ceramics ≈ 200

Typical: 0.32-0.42

Equations

Fracture area (both wings): A = 2 × xf × hf

Proppant volume: Vprop = M / ρgrain

Bulk pack volume: Vbulk = Vprop / (1 - φpack)

Average width: w̄ = Vbulk / A [ft] × 12 [in/ft]

Embedment effect: Closure stress reduces effective width; estimate ~10-20% reduction at 5,000 psi.

Disclaimer: Average propped width is a simplified estimate. Actual width profiles require numerical simulation (e.g., ResFrac, Fracpro).
