How this was calculated

Conversions: 1 CCF = 1.037 therms. 1 MCF = 10.37 therms. 1 therm = 100,000 BTU = 29.3 kWh.

Gas cost: therms x rate + fixed charge.

Electric equivalent: Same BTU delivered via electric heating (assuming 100% efficiency for electric, user-specified furnace efficiency for gas).

Understanding Natural Gas Costs

Natural gas is billed in therms, CCF (100 cubic feet), or MCF (1,000 cubic feet). One therm equals 100,000 BTU of energy. The US average residential gas price is around $1.20 per therm, but varies by region and season.

Gas heating is typically cheaper per BTU than electric resistance heating but more expensive than heat pump heating in moderate climates. Modern condensing furnaces achieve 95-98% efficiency, making gas competitive even in areas with moderate electric rates.
