Water Cut: WC = Qw / (Qw + Qo) × 100%

Net Oil: Net Oil = Gross Oil × (1 - BS&W/100). BS&W (Basic Sediment & Water) accounts for entrained water and solids in the oil stream.

Production Allocation: Each well's allocated production = (well test rate / sum of all test rates) × facility metered total. This proportional method is the industry standard when individual well meters are not available.

Water Cut & Production Allocation in Oil Operations

Water cut is one of the most fundamental production parameters, directly impacting revenue, lifting costs, and reservoir management decisions. As reservoirs mature, water cut typically increases from near-zero to 90%+ in late field life, progressively reducing net oil production and increasing water handling costs. Monitoring water cut trends is essential for identifying water breakthrough, coning, and channeling problems.

Production allocation is required whenever multiple wells produce through shared facilities without individual fiscal meters. The standard approach allocates the facility's metered production to individual wells proportionally based on periodic well tests. While simple, this method can introduce significant errors if test data is stale, test conditions differ from normal operations, or well performance changes between test dates. More sophisticated methods use continuous multiphase flow meters or model-based virtual metering.
